ABOUT THE AREA

Situated halfway between Granada city and the Mediterranean Costa Tropical you will find the Lecrin Valley. A peaceful green oasis with authentic Spanish white washed villages. You can wander around for hours passing orange and lemon trees and be stunned by the spectacular views over the Beznar Lake. The restaurants in the different villages offer nice local food and good tapas, and because of the friendly locals you feel instantly at home.
 
 
Lecrin, Mondujar and Talara

 
Two villages melted into one (with 2300 inhabitants in total), lively but at the same time peaceful, just off the motorway from Granada towards Motril. There are several bars serving great tapas, perfect for a quick drink, alternatively, you can sample the local specialities in one of the two restaurants. There is a pharmacy, three supermarkets, three banks with cash machines, a post office, a primary school and Mondujar has a public swimming pool, open during July and August. The villages are surrounded by orange groves providing stunning views from various angles.
 
 
Chite

 
Chite is divided into upper and lower barrios. It’s a very charming village set amongst the orchards with only 300 inhabitants offering spectacular views towards the Beznar Lake. There are no shops in the village, but there are daily services by little vans bringing in everything from fruit and vegetables to fresh fish and frozen produce. Chite is within a 10 minute walk from Lecrin.
 
 
Murchas

 
This small village is located between Lecrin and Melegis set in the beautiful valley, surrounded by orange and lemon groves and providing beautiful walks into the countryside. There is a supermarket and a bakery. A very peaceful village with only 280 inhabitants.
 
 
Melegis

 
Melegis is a lovely village with 600 inhabitants, set between beautiful orange and lemon groves, providing fabulous walks from the village towards the Beznar Lake and into the country side with various tracks leading to other villages. There are two restaurants serving local food and tapas and a hotel with economically priced rooms. Also there is a bakery open 7 days a week, a bank and two little supermarkets.
 
 
Restabal

 
This is a very popular and picturesque village situated between Melegis and Pinos del Valle. It has 600 inhabitants and various services are available, including two good restaurants, three bars, a bank, and a pharmacy. Restabal offers the best views towards the lake and towards Melegis.
 
 
Pinos del Valle

 
Pinos del Valle is divided in an upper and a lower part, both with their own church. It has 1200 inhabitants. There are various bars, a restaurant and a disco. It also has a bank a pharmacy and a primary school. The landscape is mainly olive trees, orange and lemon trees and the mountains on the back offer nice walking tracks through pine trees.
 
 
Beznar

 
Beznar is situated next to the lake, with a lovely recreational area at its shore. In the village you will find a bar, a pharmacy and a bakery. It is very well connected to the motorway towards Granada and Motril and the main road up to Lanjaron and the Alpujarra.
 
 
Saleres

 
With 280 inhabitants, Saleres in one of the smallest villages in the Lecrin valley. There are no shops in the village, but there are daily services by minivans bringing in all necessary groceries. Also there is a small market once a week. The views from the villages towards the countryside and the mountains are absolutely stunning. Also the atmosphere is very special and peaceful, as though you have travelled back in time.
 
 
Albuñelas

 
Albuñuelas is one of the slightly larger villages with 1330 inhabitants. It is divided into two areas, the upper and lower barrios. The lower barrio displays many Arabic influences in its architecture and so most houses are built along very charming narrow streets. Most shops and restaurants are in the upper part of the village, where you will also find the town hall, the bank, the pharmacy and the primary school.
 
 
Conchar

 
Conchar is a very pretty little village surrounded by beautiful scenery. It has only 400 inhabitants. There is a bakery, a bar and a very nice restaurant with a lovely outside terrace where they serve very good home-made meals.
 
 
Cozvijar

 
Cozvijar is a small village with very good road connection towards Granada and Motril. In the village you find a supermarket, a pharmacy and just outside the village is a very well known restaurant. Cozvijar has 700 inhabitants.
 
 
Niguelas

 
This lovely village is situated at the bottom of the Sierra Nevada national park. Niguelas has 1200 inhabitants and offers a range of bars and restaurants, a bank, a pharmacy and a primary school. The beautiful plaza is the centre of the village social life. From the village there are beautiful walking tracks into the mountains.
 
 
Acequias

 
Acequias is a small village with only 150 inhabitants and perched above the valley, with the best views towards the valley and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. There are no shops, but a baker visits the village every day and once a week a minivan of the Lecrin supermarket comes to the village.
 
 
Durcal

 
Durcal is the largest village in the Lecrin Valley, with over 6000 inhabitants. In this village you find anything you need, from a variety of bars and restaurants, to a large range of shops and larger supermarkets, pharmacy, a medical centre, two veterinary clinics, dentists, DIY shops, a large weekly market, a primary and secondary school and a bus service to Granada capital runs every half hour. It’s a very lively village with beautiful views towards the Sierra Nevada national park.
 
 
Padul

 
Just outside the Lecrin valley area you find Padul, a large village with over 7000 inhabitants. Like Durcal, Padul also offers everything you need. Restaurants, bars, primary and secondary school, bus service to Granada, medical centre, veterinarian, DIY shops, large weekly market, dentists etc. Just outside of Padul on the way to Otura there is also a new bilingual school.
 
 
Distances and accessibility
Within half an hour drive you can either be in Granada city or at the beach of the 'Costa Tropical'. The beautiful Alpujarra area is only 15 minutes away and after a 45 minute drive into the mountains you are at the bottom of the ski slopes of the Sierra Nevada Ski Resort.
Malaga airport is about an hour and 30 minutes and Granada airport is only a 35-minute drive.
